Cisplatin and its use in cervical cancer: an overview

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus that connects to the 1  vagina. Human papillomavirus (HPV) is considered the main cause of most cases of cervical cancer, and early detection plays a crucial role in increasing the chances of recovery

Chemotherapy as a Standard Option: Chemotherapy is considered a standard treatment option for cervical cancer when local or regional treatments are insufficient to control the spread of the cancer.

Cisplatin as a Core Treatment: Cisplatin is the most important and widely used chemotherapy drug in the treatment of cervical cancer for over 40 years.

Cisplatin's Multiple Roles: Cisplatin is not only used alone but is also considered a foundation for combining other treatments to form an effective multi-agent treatment regimen.

Diverse Clinical Use of Cisplatin: Cisplatin is used in various stages of treatment, including neoadjuvant, adjuvant, salvage, and palliative therapy.

Cisplatin and Radiation Therapy: Cisplatin is an important agent for use in conjunction with radiation therapy (as a radiosensitizer) in concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT).
The Ideal Dose of Cisplatin: The most commonly used dose is 50 mg/m2, although a 100 mg/m2 dose may show a higher response rate, it does not make a significant difference in the final outcomes and increases side effects.

Comparison Between Cisplatin Doses: Studies have shown that a 100 mg/m2 dose of cisplatin does not significantly improve the complete remission rate, response duration, or survival compared to 50 mg/m2.

Side Effects of High Doses: Higher doses of cisplatin (100 mg/m2) increase toxicity, especially to the bone marrow, kidneys, and gastrointestinal system, increasing the risk of complications.

Recommendation for the Ideal Dose: Based on studies, a dose of 50 mg/m2 of cisplatin is considered the recommended and clinically preferred dose, due to its effectiveness and lower risk of side effects compared to higher doses.
